Fun With OmniGraffle (or, Why Visio Sucks)

Posted by Skrud at Friday, January 27th 2006 at 11:30am

At some point in my User Interface class the prof mentioned something about Visio, which is an obnoxious horrible pain in the ass to use and never quite lays stuff out right. By contrast, the Mac-only OmniGraffle snaps everything into place and makes everything pretty.

Case in point, Visio doesn’t let you make insane deployment diagrams that combine the awesome power of Cray Supercomputers, PowerMacs, and Satellites.

By trying to be “smart” it’s just a huge pain in the ass.

I try and look around for a diamond but I don’t find one. Fine I’ll take a square and rotate it to make a diamond. I put a text box inside and it rotates the text automatically too and I can find no way to un-associate them! Gah!

Dia on the other hand is pure diagram making greatness.

Visio is great for drawing out user interfaces. All the controls are there and it’s pretty easy. As far as class/use case/e-r/sequence and other UML diagrams go it’s a completely different story. I need to find myself something (non-mac) to do my 390 project :)

Ummmmm just look at the comment on top of yours? Dia rules.

I don’t like Dia. Especially the fact that if you just ever so slightly miss the little ‘x’ to attach lines to, the entities aren’t actually connected … And then there’s the whole alignment/arrangement thing … I’ve spent hours making ER diagrams in Dia. Never again.

Well maybe they fixed the line attaching? Because when I go to attach a line the border of the whole thing highlights red when it’s going to attach. If it’s not highlighted red then it’s not going to attach if you let go of the click.

Visio is clearly for bummers. Bummers with aids no less.

Yeah, Visio is superior suckage for UML. I love it when I save a diagram, then open it and get the following message…

This drawing contains shapes created with a newer version of this software. (No it doesn’t, I made this file with this exact program on this exact computer.) These shapes may not be compatible with the installed version. (Yay, a program that’s not compatible with itself.) [x] Save a copy of the original drawing [ ] Create a report of the changes Buttons at the bottom are YES and NO. (What am I saying yes/no to? There was no question asked.)

Happy to find a good soul to share the impression I have of Visio. Just did a search for “Visio sucks” to find whether I am alone with my critic. Unfortunately Visio is part of our “Stanard Operating Environment” an the only to allowed for drawing. There it is packaged with other world class worsts like IBM “Lotus Notes”.

Can you now imagine how terrible my working day must be ?
