Gentoo!

I got Gentoo up and running! It turns out I’m just a dumbass and didn’t read the bug report that clearly stated adding “pnpbios=off” to the booting kernel to disable it, allowing me to boot the kernel properly. (Although I did try guessing things like “nopnpbios”…. they really should add that option in the on-line menu on the bootable cd). Either way, I’ve bootstrapped and compiled my system and now it’s customized to my hardware. (Sort of… I had to use -march=pentium3 after being warned that the pentium4 option is slightly broken at the moment). It’s running super fast now, especially since I’m not even running X-Windows yet. What’s stopping me is deciding which Desktop Environment I want to use. Gentoo gives me the option of setting environment variables that will compile programs optimized towards specific setups. So, for example, I can say USE=”gtk2 gnome -kde -qt” which will build the programs (that support those flags) with gtk and gnome support, and disable kde and qt support meaning that the overall program will compile faster, and run faster (since it will be considerable smaller not needing to include all those hefty KDE Libs). Or I could optimize for KDE and leave out Gnome… I’m stuck! I don’t know what to choose! Anyway, I’ve setup a poll on the forum so people can vote and help make my decision for me! So go vote!
